These artworks offer a unique perspective on human-animal life through ornamental depictions of out of place animals. The subjects exist in an artificially constructed moment, symbolising numerous complexities in human animal relationships – domestication, personification or self projections, deviation in evolution and value of animals.
Grace explored what she calls ‘detached portraiture’ she works painting faces without personality, using feminine sculpture and other art forms as visual references for her paintings. Bringing a contemporary view on archaic sculpture, using traditional art forms of oil painting and marble sculpture, painting on the surface of wood boards and framing or cropping the reference images to create an awkward close up, unconventional view of the sculpture, the final result detached cold portraits.
